| 04 | Why do you live in suburbia if its wrong for you? | "Good question. In fact, I've lived in suburbia almost all my life and I know it through and through. Perhaps Im kidding myself when I say its not my true milieu - thats another thing Im trying to work out. In some ways it is wrong for me - for example, Ive no interest in gardens and have never once sat in my garden in 25 years. I dont even own a deck-chair!
"And Im impatient with the suburban culture of obsessive car-cleaning and lawn-mowing, and keeping oneself to oneself behind net curtains, and being conformist in ones outlook. On the other hand, where I live is wonderfully quiet and peaceful, and we have lots of interesting birds - 4 jays on the oak tree outside my study window at the very moment Im writing these words! So obviously there are advantages." |
