04 Why do you live in suburbia if it’s wrong for you? "Good question. In fact, I've lived in suburbia almost all my life and I know it through and through. Perhaps I’m kidding myself when I say it’s not my true milieu - that’s another thing I’m trying to work out. In some ways it is wrong for me - for example, I’ve no interest in gardens and have never once sat in my garden in 25 years. I don’t even own a deck-chair!

"And I’m impatient with the suburban culture of obsessive car-cleaning and lawn-mowing, and keeping oneself to oneself behind net curtains, and being conformist in one’s outlook. On the other hand, where I live is wonderfully quiet and peaceful, and we have lots of interesting birds - 4 jays on the oak tree outside my study window at the very moment I’m writing these words! So obviously there are advantages."
