Driven apart by the sensational known as women . . . Born of Woman is full of contrast, setting the glittering sham of the media world against the brutal splendours of nature; exploding the settled tie of marriage with the squalls of lesbian love, and juxtaposing casual, even violent, sex with the sacred power to create life. A book is born, a child is born. One brings riches and retribution, the other becomes a saviour: the strange symbolic love-child who arrives on Christmas Day - after narrowly escaping being born in Harrods restaurant! Born of Woman offers ingenious variations on Perriam's perennial theme of sexual survival, and shows the unusual range of her fictional repertoire. She has a considerable command of her craft, and a shrewd sense of those aspects of contemporary life which are worth recording. Times Literary Supplement What is important about the
book a deeply serious, even spiritual theme. Among the lip-smacking descriptions of sexual encounters, the tensions and bonds between parents and children are illustrated with considerable subtlety. Perriam writes with gusto and intelligence, and the story roars along to its unexpectedly touching end. British Book News Richly entertaining. Perriam untangles this modern family muddle with unflagging interest and a newly sensitive but still flamboyant voice. Company

"Born of Woman is set partly in Northumberland, and Hester's isolated farmhouse becomes almost another character in the novel. To get to know the area (and acquire a working knowledge of forestry and sheep-farming), I went to stay in the Northumbrian wilds where, despite the sparse population, I must have met more people in a fortnight than in the ten years I'd lived in commuter Surrey!"
